In a recent Dallas City Council meeting, one councilor had a particularly disturbing idea of how to deal with the stray dogs in the city. Council Member Rickey Callahan is looking to get rid of them in the most vicious and inhumane way.
They bring in guys with helicopters and all that to go after wild hogs, he said. We ought to be doing thusly with feral animals.
It is unclear what the members of the Dallas City Council had to say about this proposal, but it seems the situation of the city’s stray dogs is far from being solved.
In another outrageous proposal, the Dallas Animal Control and the city manager’s office want to catch and immediately euthanize all stray dogs in areas with lots of dog bites. The city of Dallas currently holds a three day waiting period for euthanasia after the dogs have been captured. City staff are now determined to eliminate this holding time for all community cats, underage animals, and/or strays impounded from designated areas with high incidence of injuries by animals.†Up to this point, city officials have not identified the areas with the most dog bytes. The political support or the legal aspect of this proposal also remains unclear.
Shelters all across the city Dallas have been doing a lousy job, with an extremely high rate of euthanasia. Meanwhile, animal shelters from all around Texas have been performing great and have kept euthanasia rates at historically low levels – for instance, Austin and Williamson Counties are rescuing and rehoming 95 per cent of the dogs that are brought in each year; Seagoville is saving an impressive 99 per cent.
We, the undersigned, are extremely concerned about the ideas that have been proposed in order to deal with Dallas’ stray animals. We hereby urge the authorities to find a humane and decent solution to this ongoing problem and hope the plight of these harmless animals can come to an end very soon. Just because these animals do not have a place to go to does not give anyone the right to harm them. The stray dogs of Dallas deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
