Hydraulic fracturing, or “frackingâ€, is the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas inside.
There is mounting evidence that this procedure, widely used across the entire United States, can cause disastrous and irreversible damage to the environment if carried out on a large scale (please the links I collected from several newspapers at the end of this petition).
Just to make point out the most important highlights: fracking has been linking to numerous seismic disturbances; fracking could also potentially damage the natural landscape as well. Furthermore, statistics indicate that fracking releases more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than any other type of drilling activities. Given the extensive research of was green gas emission mean to the environment, allowing fracking activities to continue essentially means that we are self-destructing our planet.
In spite of all this, the UK government has granted numerous licenses to drill in the desperate attempt to make a quick profit.
UK is certainly in no need to adopt fracking. It has the possibility to turn to renewable energy – which is cheaper and far less damaging to the environment. Unfortunately, the British political system is still filled with numerous fossil and nuclear lobbyist that have a lot of influence and power.
Great Britain should look up to Austria – which, in a few years, will be 100 per cent powered by renewable energy. Even underdeveloped countries in Eastern Europe such as Romania have said ‘NO’ to fracking out of fear of damaging their environment. Americans are the only powerful country that are using this type of energy, but they simply do not care about the environment, and the UK should certainly not take them as role models.
It is time for the United Kingdom to respect the commitments signed in Paris COP21. Ask David Cameron to revoke fracking permits all across UK and dismiss the Environment Secretary for his disastrous activity and replacing him with a minister that actually cares about safeguarding the environment.
Together we
can make a difference. The future of an entire nation is at stake. Join the
campaign for an environmentally friendly Great Britain and help end the
fracking era in the UK!
