Lefore County, Mississippi: Luke, a gorgeous Malamute-Husky mix dog
and a cherished family member, was callously shot in the face on June 13th
by a neighbor. His family was not home, but neighbors heard a loud sound coming
from outside and went to investigate, only to discover a neighbor from up the
road attacking the harmless animal as Luke was running away, howling in pain.
The dog managed to take shelter in the wooden area behind his home. The person
that witnesses the startling scene – whose children often play with the gentle
canine – alerted the authorities immediately.
The suspect has been identified as Eddie Gene Mathews. Having had
too much too drink, Mathews was extremely agitated and incoherent. He was subsequently
booked and charged on the spot.
Last week, Mathews appeared in front of Leflore County presiding
Justice Court Judge Jim Campbell, where he admitted to his wrongdoings, but
refused to apologize to the dog’s family. Judge Campbell ignored all the
suffering poor Luke had to endure over the past month and handed down a
ridiculous sentence, consisting of a $500 fine and a suspended jail term for 6
months. In other words, Mathews will not spend a day behind bars.
According to MSSS 97-41-16 (2) (b) Mathews’ actions carry a minimum
fine of $1, 000 and a jail term of up to six months. Not only did Mathews
receive only half of the minimum fine, but was also spared jail. The sentence
is nothing but intolerable and outraged in such a civilized society such as the
United States.
I am deeply disturbed by the fact that no justice has been served
for Luke and hereto urge the Mississippi judicial authorities to review this
case and rescind the decision handed down by Judge Campbell. Officials must
take a stand and send out a clear message that such despicable actions against
innocent animals with not be tolerated.

PS. Luke survived the attack. He was taken to an emergency vet and
was stitched up. He still has a few bruises, but is fully expected to recover
physicially soon. As for the emotional part, Luke will have to learn to trust
people again. Luke’s owners stated they are extremely disappointed with the
sentence and fear the neighbor might strike again anytime.
