Motherwell, Scotland: A British couple that neglected their pet dog
so badly it had to eat its own tail to survive has been found guilty. In spite of what they did, they only received a
ridiculously light sentence. Please support my petition to overrule the
judicial decision and help ensure true justice is served.
Angela Todd, 33, and Martin Randall, 31, failed to feed their
Staffordshire bull terrier dog for weeks. The dog was so emaciated it ate its
own tail in a desperate attempt to survive. By the time the dog was discovered
by the authorities, it was too late for him to be saved. The poor animal had to
be euthanized, to prevent additional suffering.
A court had found the couple guilty of failing to provide the
necessary treatment for a chronic tail injury suffered by the dog. They were
sentenced to 200 hours of community service and received a five-year ban on
owning pets.
Following the decision, a group of angry people attacked the
couple’s home in Craigneuk, near Motherwell, forcing the culprits to flee. Todd
and Randall had their home windows smashed in several places by people who were
outraged by what they had done.
A former Craigneuk community councilor, Christine McGeechan,
described the case to a local newspaper:
It is just disgusting. That helpless dog deserves much more than
this. All residents of the area were appalled. I was informed that the couple
responsible for this had to move out due to the backlash they encountered. When
I first heard about the case, I got in contact with some of the neighbours to
ask them why no one had reported the dog’s condition to the authorities. I was
told that no one had had seen the dog in months and thought they had given it
away.
We, the undersigned, firmly believe that the sentence imposed
against Angela Todd and Martin Randall is extremely lenient and no justice has
been served in this matter. We hereto demand a retrial and hope for a much
tougher sentence, which should be in accordance with all the suffering endured
by this defenseless pet dog.
