Hidden surveillance camera has exposed what is really going on behind closed doors at New Zealand dairy farms. The dairy industry is merciless and has shown it has no compassion for animals.
The footage, published by animal rights group SAFE, depicts the mistreatment of the so-called ‘bobby’ calves – male calves born for the unique objective to ensure the mother keeps producing milk. These unwanted animals are regarded as ‘surplus’.
According to SAFE estimates, more that two million bobby calves are destroyed each year – some of the animals are just four days old.
The videos show how the calves are tossed into overcrowded trucks or dragged behind their legs on the tarmac. Others are left to perish until they pass away in small, dirty cages. In another sequel, an abattoir worker kicks and stomps on a calf repeatedly, throwning the animal around like a football.
In the wake of this footage, we call on the international community to initiate a total boycott on dairy products coming from New Zealand and attack this ruthless industry where it hurts them most: in their pockets. In every glass of milk you drink, think about how much suffering has been inflicted on an innocent calf.
Statistics indicate that New Zealand mainly exports its dairy products to countries in the Middle East, Southeast Asia and North Africa.
We, the undersigned, urge central authorities to do improve animal
welfare in the dairy industry by conducting more inspections at farms all
across the country and ensure animals are well treated. Incidents like the ones
caught on camera should never be allowed to happen again.
