Shanghai, China: A dog owner reported the loss of his beloved
companion. Circumstances of this event remain uncertain at this point, but the
next day, the owner would find out that his story would not have a happy
ending, but rather a tragic one. The owner managed to locate his dog, only to
discover his beloved companion was no longer alive. What is more, the pooch had
endure tremendous suffering before his passing: as the photo on the right
illustrates, the dog was sliced open with a what seems to have been a huge
knife and had all his legs viciously cut off, before being dumped in a park.
I am baffled by this disturbing news for a couple of reasons. First
of all, this incident unfolded in Shanghai, which is regarded as one of the
most cosmopolitan cities in the world. Sadly, this is not an isolated case. A
few months ago, a park guard was spotted tossing a stray dog in a public
fountain and hitting the defenseless animal with a stick. Dozens of witnesses
stood by and refused to intervene. By the time help arrived, it was too late to
save the abused dog. I have never heard of incidents this violent in other
major cities such as New York, London or Paris. My second grave reason for
concern is the fact that no justice will be served, since there are no animal
welfare laws in China, hence there is no legal basis for police intervention.
The person responsible for this atrocity will get to walk scot-free.
Please show your support and let Chinese officials know the time for
a change has come. We, the undersigned, are tired of all the abuse going on in
China and demand urgent action is taken. Support animal protection laws now and
help put a stop to all this senseless cruelty! Pet owners have the right to
feel safe in their country, but this is hardly happening at the moment!
