This case perfectly illustrates what thousands of innocent horses in Colombia are forced to endure on a daily basis. A helpless animal was trapped in mid air after being overloaded by his irresponsible owner. The owner took it upon himself to put much more weight than the horse could carry. When the animal was succumbed to the weight, the cruel man was left stratching his head. The video shows the horse trying to escape, but to no avail. Towards the end of the footage, the man tries to unload part of his products in order to get the horse down, but there is no guarantee this blatant mistreatment ends here. Tomorrow, that horse could face another major threat.

Horses in Colombia are generally overworked – either in the touristic sector or to carry merchandise of all types. These gentle animals are forced to work at least 12 hours a day (seven days a week) in all weather conditions (including in the hot summer days or when it is cold and raining). Most of them receive little food compared to the energy they are consuming; owners also fail to provide them with the shelter they need throughout the day. Horses are kept so they can work until they collapse. When this happens, owners usually call the garbage men and simply toss them away, like some disposable objects, before heading out and purchasing a new animal!

This outrageous and senseless behavior has been going on for far too long. The blatant mishandling of horses in Colombia needs to stop.

In my view, the only efficient way to do that is to implement tougher animal protection laws that will encourage horse owners to act responsibly. A clear code of conduct – which should stipulate all the steps owners must take for the wellbeing of these animals – should also be implemented.

Please be a voice for these mistreated animals! Horses deserve a chance to a decent life in Colombia.
