The incident was caught on camera by shocked residents, who
immediately took to social media to report what hey had just witnessed. A
heartless garbage disposal worker can be seen tossing an injured stray dog in
the back of a garbage truck crusher in the municipality of Presidente
Figuiredo, Amazonas province, Brazil.
Witnesses claim that the dog was peacefully wandering on the street when he was run over by the driver. Realizing what he had done, the employee got out of the truck to inspect his vehicle and the dog. But instead of helping the distressed animal, the man made matters worse: he tied a rope around the dog’s neck, dragged him a few meters before tossing him into the crusher!
The Department of Environment was notified by this incident and initiated an investigation, which lead to the driver being fined R3, 000 (about $950). But after an appeal formulated by the assailant, the fine was cut in half. This is all the punishment this cruel man ever received for this vicious actions! When interviewed by his superiors, the man defended his actions, claiming that animals are animals and people are people. In other words, animals do not matter in his views.
The wounded dog eventually escaped from the truck crusher, but has not been located ever since.
The fundamental issue that needs to be addressed are the extremely
lenient laws against cruelty to animals in Brazil. Too many abusers occur and
yet so few attackers are brought to justice. This is inadmissible. As an animal
lover, it truly hurts to witness the daily plight of these voiceless creatures –
change must come and it needs to be implemented immediately!
We, the undersigned, call on Braziliam lawmakers to step up and implement tougher animal rights laws that will punish perpetrators with mandatory jail time and steeper penalties. This is the only way abusers will be discouraged and animals will be kept safe!
