This incident shocked the entire community of animal lovers in the municipality of Sinti Sirres, Greece. A dog was tossed in a tar full of pit and left to perish by his heartless owner.
The helpless animal was discovered by a lady who was having a stroll in the woods. She was left in dismay upon seeing the defenseless animal all covered in tar and unable to move.
Animal welfare organization FRIEND rushed to the scene and managed
to bring the dog to safety. The animal was later rushed to a veterinarian,
where it was determined he had been left in that ditch for at least two days.
Acccording to local residents, the dog belongs to a hunter that never took care of him. The dog would always be kept on a chain, he would get food and water rarely and he was never taken to a vet (a reasonable explanation for why the pooch was covered in ticks and fleas from top to bottom).
Animal lovers claim that they have reported the unlawful hunter to the authorities several times, but nothing has been done and the blatant neglect has continued ever since.
This incident took place last summer and the hunter has not yet been punished – and it will be likely to remain this way. Police has not shown any interest in bringing justice to the dog and pursuing charges against the heartless monster behind this.
This is another case that perfectly illustrates why Greece is in desperate need of tougher animal welfare laws. As things are right now, animals have practically no protection whatsoever and are prone to a huge amount of abuse.
The time to think about our precious animals has come. I understand that Greece has been struggling economically for the past years and that Prime Minister Tsipras has had a lot on his plate, but animal welfare must also constitute a priority.
We, the undersigned, demand tougher laws that will see every person that mistreats an innocent animal be prosecuted and be handed out mandatory jail time! As things stand right now, offenders are not even prosecuted, yet alone convicted!
Please help change all of this and make a difference for animals in
Greece!
