A recent investigation carried out by the National Observer has revealed the inconvenient truth about fur labeling in Canada. The toque in the photo is a very popular garment in Canada, manufactured by Kit and Ace, a company that boasts about its commitment to integrity and protecting the environment.
However, the garment has been blatantly mislabeled: the Canadian company is selling the toque with pom-pom made out of 100 per cent real raccoon dog fur, but has it labeled as Asiatic raccoon. One might think that the toque is made of raccoon fur (which isn’t any better, by the way), but actually the Asian raccoon is a member of the canine family.
The product can be purchased online for $98.
Kit an Ace representatives have indicated an internal investigation has commenced and further information will be released to the public in due time.
Experts believe the company has chosen to mislabel their products as Asiatic racoon to distance itself from the emotional connection people have to pets.
According to Peter Fricker, spokesperson of the Vancouver Humane Society, Kit and Ace, as well as other companies, are using different names to avoid giving the impression that an animal is related, in one way or another, to a domestic dog which people have affinity for.
Labeling aside, the suffering of these animals in beyond cruel: most
of the world’s fur garments (including these hats) are made in China, where
there are no animal protection laws whatsoever. These poor animals are forced
to sit in small, dirty cages for days or even weeks; they receive no food and
water; when the time to enter the production line has arrived, these creatures
have their faces stomped on, they are hit with bats and other objects and
ultimately skinned alive. No fashion item is worth this inhumanity.
Ask Kit and Ace to issue a public apology on this matter, drop all fur from their collections and donate $100, 000 to a anti-fur society of their choosing.
Tell Kit and Ace to denounce the fur industry and to stop abusing
animals for fashion!
