The place we are referring to is none other than Iran, where the
Muslim culture has left deep scars on animals all across the country. For
instance, a proposed law saw harsh physical punishment for owners that kept
dogs as pets or walked them down the street – thankfully, the law was never put
into practice, but only comes to show how policitians in Teheran view animals.
And they certainly do not regard them as sentient human beings and precious
family members, but rather as a nuisance to society.
In Iran there are no animal welfare laws and abusing these gentle
creatures is all too common. The worst part is that since there is no legal
system in place, the attackers get to walk free almost every time – on their
best day, the Iranian judicial system will charge the perpetrators with
‘destruction of property’, but that is about it.
Even authorities themselves harm animals – there have been numerous
dog poisoning campaigns initiated by the government in a desperate attempt to
get rid of the ‘pesky’ street animals. If the own government of a country sets
such low standards, what more can you expect from its people?
The situation is not new, it has been going on for years and years –
and officials have not lifted a finger to address it.
The time for a change has come. We, the undersigned, firmly believe
that the animals of Iran deserve better. Recently, Iran has opened up to the
West and has been signing numerous business deals with countries such as the
United States, France or Italy. Iran is also back on the international oil
market after years of international sanctions.
If Iran wants to earn the respect of the entire world, it must show
compassion and love to all its inhabitants, animals included. The problem
regarding animals in Iran needs to be fixed as soon as possible.
Urge the Iranian officials to implement animal welfare laws, just as
the countries which Iran does business with have. They should definitely serve
as an inspiration for Iranian authorities.
No more suffering for Iran’s animals!
