The tradition of tying a dog to the back of a bull is held in the
small village of Chalhuani near Abancay, in central Peru.
The video depicting this disturbing tradition went viral after being published online.
A man is seen tying the dog down to the back of a bull, which is about to be sent in the arena. The dog can be heard barking and yelping, as he is clearly not enjoying the show. Unfortunately, the dog is helpless, as it cannot move a muscle, apart from lifting its head.
Moments after, the raging bull is sent into the arena and can be seen jumping up and down with the frightened dog tied to its back. Sadly, reports indicate that none of the dogs used in this cruel tradition survive by the end of the day.
This tradition is carried out each year during the religious celebrations dedicated to Virgin Mary and the Virgen de la Asuncion. Villagers seem really proud of this tradition and have showed no sign that they intend to stop it.
A villager identified as Alfeo said during an interview for a local TV station the following: We pick a dog that that was not obedient over the past 12 month. The ideal candidate is a dog that has been causing trouble all the time. We feel that this is a fit punishment for the dog’s inappropriate behaviour.
Please sign the petition and urge authorities to intervene and put
an end to this senseless mistreatment of man's best friend! This practice is
absolutely appalling and should be immediately stopped.
