Late last year, a +Kota employee – a widely known pet store chain in
Mexico – filmed himself while severely mishandling several animals what what
seems to be his own amusement.
The employee and one of his friends thoroughly documented the abuse
and later uploaded the videos on social media, causing massive outrage.
The videos show how the heartless employee is hitting a small dog
over and over, before slamming the defenseless creature against a wall; in
another series of upsetting footage, a hamster is kicked around like a
football, before being tossed in a bucket; last but now least, the final video shows a dog being slapped several times over his face. During all this time, the attacker is
laughing and seemingly enjoying himself.
Although the pet store chain has fired the employee immediately and
has publicly denounced his behavior, these videos cast a dark light on what is really
happening in pet stores all across Mexico behind closed doors.
Actually, this is not the only report about animals being mistreated
in such stores.
In the light of these incidents, it is my firm belief that the Mexican authorities should make it a mandatory legal requirement for all pet stores to install CCTV cameras, so the relevant authorities, as well as the owners of these facilities, can be kept permanently in the loop with regards to the welfare of the animals.
It has become obvious that the safety of our beloved pets can no longer be guaranteed, as many pet stores are no longer represent a safe environment for animals. We, the undersigned, firmly believe installing CCTV cameras will have will significantly dimish the number of abuses and will increase protection to all the animals.
