9.677 NEEDED
This dog was run over by a bus driver in the Turkish city of Adana. In the immediate aftermath of the attack, many concerned people jumped to help the severely wounded animal. But one person – the driver himself – was not keen at all at helping, as if the canine’s life was worth absolutely nothing. When rescuers asked the driver what was this all about, the heartless man told them ‘his job did not consist of looking out for street dogs’.
As a result of the attack, the dog’s rear legs were crushed, as several startled passers-by rushed to give him some water. You could see that the dog was suffering badly. After a long and painful wait, rescuers finally arrived at the scene and took the dog to the State Animal Hospital. Unfortunately, the dog succumbed to his injuries and sadly passed away in the same day. His wounds were simply too much for him to survive.
Unfortunately, such events are not singular in Turkey. The country has been facing a stray dog over-population crisis for the past few years and officials has failed to address this issue appropriately. The number of street animals has completely gotten out of control, and these harmless creatures and subjected to all sorts of inhumane treatment – they are routinely dragged behind cars, run over by vehicles (as you have seen in this case), poisoned or hit with bats or bladed objects for entertainment. In addition, due to the country’s lack of animal protection laws, police rarely investigate such types of cases and perpetrators walk free far too often.
While I am aware of the political and social turmoil in Turkey caused by the recent attacks in Istanbul, this does not mean the government must turn their backs on the animals. Animal welfare – particularly the issue of Turkish street animals – must constitute a key priority on the government’s agenda. Implementing spay-and-neuter campaigns, building modern shelters and offering better support for animal rescue groups are just a few key measures that need to be taken in the immediate future.
Just because these dogs do not have a place to call home, that does not mean they should be treated savagely. The dogs all across Turkey need us more than ever. Show your support now and help improve their lives by signing and sharing the petition below.
Thank you to all for your support.
