34-year-old Greig Tonkins found himself in the international
spotlight after a video of him punching a defenseless kangaroo went viral on
social media.
It turns out that Mr Tonkins is a zookeeper at the Taronga Western
Plains Zoo in Dubbo, New South Wales in Australia. The attacker explained that
he only did this to protect his dog, Max, from being eaten by the kangaroo. It
was later revealed that it was actually the other way, since Tonkins is an avid
hunter and was on a hunting trip with “pig dogsâ€, which are specifically bred
to harass and harm wildlife. So the kangaroo was not attacking the dog, he was
trying to protect himself and his family.
A spokesperson with the Taronga Western Plains Zoo confirmed that
Greing Tonkins is an employee at the facility.
We, the undersigned, are extremely disturbed by the fact that a
person with zero compassion towards wildlife is allowed to work as a zookeeper
and hereby ask Taronga Western Plains Zoo to fire this cruel man as soon as
possible. Mr. Tonkins has proven he does not deserve to work as a zookeeper and
it would be a true disgrace if this man was allowed to keep his job.
