Batibo is a town in the African country in Cameroon which is now making the headlines because it has started to host a cat eating festival.
Cat meat is considered a delicacy and is consumed on Christmas (to allegedly honor the Christian values) and on different occasions – especially connected to witchcraft. But now, residents have decided to take it all a step further and host their own cat meat festival.
As opposed to dog meat festivals that are held in several parts of Asia, the cats involved in this sick and inhumane event are not strays, but rather people’s pets. Residents claim that eating stray cats is unaccpetable, due to hygiene-related issues and fear of rabies. However, villagers have no problem cooked up their own pets.
There is no indication that Cameroon is suffering from shortage of
food. Villagerd are keen on consuming cat meat because they believe it gives
them good fortunate. In other words, it is all about superstition.
At the beginning of the festival, villagers scour all properties in search for cats and kittens. The moggies are placed in hessian sacks, which are tighly shut, to dimish the flow of oxygen to the cats and prevent the animals from scratching. Supersititon states that cats must be handle very gentle and must not scratch – those who scratch will only be blessed with bad karma.
In an interview for BBC, one local villager stated the following: I
would recommend to everyone to consume cat meat. It’s very sweet and helps
reduce the fever
Cats are either barbecued or cooked as stew and served with vegetable and plantain.
Once the cats have been collected in the bags, they are pounded with heavy sticks so they are knocked unconscious. They are later skinned while still alive and cooked for their meat. The entire part of the cat is eaten, including the head, which is believed to be extremely tasty.
Rough estimates indicate that over 20, 000 cats are cooked each year for their meat in Cameroon; over two hundred cats are cooked at this festival alone.
Please take a stand against this inhumanity and urge the authorities to impose a law that will see cat meat ban in Cameroon. I am aware that enforcing laws in remote villages will be much harder to accomplish that in cities with larger infrastrcture with developed infrastructure, but those cats desperately need our help and we must not let them down.
These innocent kittens have no protection whatsoever. The leaders of the country must step up and ensure they are kept alive and healthy, not eaten for witchcraft and good fortune.
Please show your support
and help shut down the cat meat industry in Cameroon. Help take cat meat off
the menu.
