This case is just one of the many shocking incidents directed towards innocent animals that have recently occurred in Thailand.
The victim: a one-year-old, defenseless, playful dog, named “Colaâ€.
Petition target: Maximum penalty available by law against Cola’s
attacker
Petition text
Cola was discovered by his owner, 32-year-old Natnicha
Phuthornthong, with her paws ripped apart just outside her property in Samut
Prakan. One her front paws was completely shattered, while another one was
hanging by a thread. The owner quickly decided to follow the trail of blood,
which lead her directly to a neighbor’s house. The woman then took the dog to a
vet, before getting in touch with an animal welfare group and alerting the
police.
The neighbor in question, 36-year-old Theprachen Srisoda, admitted to the attack. Ms. Phuthornthong (Cola’s owners) and the perpetrator recently had a quarrel. Mr. Srisoda, who works as a crane operator in the area, was extremely upset because Cola barged into his yard and started chewing on his helmet and a pair of boots.
Cola’s owner paid the man 1, 000 baht ($30) as compensation and promised to chain Cola so the pooch will not do anything else that would annoy Scrisoda. But the man claims that the owner did not keep her promise. He recalls that when he saw Cola yet again on his property, happily chewing on another pair of shoes, he decided to teach the dog a lesson, so he grabbed a huge knife from the kitchen and viciously attacked the animal.
He then went inside as if nothing had happened. Moreover, during interviews with police, Scrisoda did not appear to be upset or concerned at all about what he did.
Cola is being cared for by veterinarians and has responded well to treatment.
Police have detained and charged the man, who is set to appear in court soon. Current Thai laws stipulate that such offences carry a maximum penalty of one year behind bars and a fine of 40, 000 Baht ($1, 200). However, such cases almost never end with the harshest penalty being applied and perpetrators often receive a warning or a small fine.
We cannot let this happen. Cola deserves full justice. Do not let
this man escape with a slap on the wrist and urge the authorities not to ignore
Cola’s suffering and impose the maximum penalty available by law.
