A cruel owner was caught on camera dragging his hunting dog behind
an SUV type car for no apparent reason. The disturbing scene unfolded in the
village of Barredo, in the Spanish province of Asturia. Luckily, the incident
was captured by a witness and precious evidence has been therefore obtained
against the perpetrator, Jose Garcia Rico.
Two animal rights groups – Adopastur and Adelante – immediately
filed charges against the attacker and made intense efforts to rescue the puppy
from Rico’s ownership. Their strives finally paid of. It was also discovered
that it is not the first time Mr. Rico had been abusing animals – several
neighbors reported him to the police for mistreating another pet, but the case was
eventually dropped and no charges were filed.
Rico was spotted tying the hunting dog to the back of his car with a
rope and driving like this for miles, as the helpless animal howled in
distress. But the dog’s suffering did not impress the owner, who kept driving
like nothing was wrong. At one point, the car reached a muddy, unpaved country
road, but Rico did not bother to stop and marched on, with the dog tied to the
back of the SUV.
The animal rights groups that made efforts to get custody of the
neglected dog claim Rico acted with utter indifference and lacked even the most
basic ounce humanity and decency, as he failed to show any remorse about his
actions. According to local activists, the dog was kept in terrible conditions,
locked up in a cage all day and only given some space when going hunting. This
is certainly not the life a pet dog should have.
The trial of Jose Garcia Rico is due to commence soon. His lawyers
are pushing for a minimum sentence, consisting of just a fine (the highest fine
that can be imposed is $2, 800). Do not let this cruel individual escape with a
slap on the wrist. Sign the petition and demand mandatory jail time against
Jose Garcia Rico, in addition to a lifetime ban on owning animals. By his
repeated offences, Mr. Rico has proven beyond doubt he is incapable of properly
taking care of pets and should be therefore stripped of this right.
