Probably the first question that comes in someone’s mind is what did this innocent puppy ever do to deserve this. The astonishing answer: the puppy was punished by his owner for chewing a cellphone. Yes, that was all this puppy did. The second question that needs an answer is how can people be this inhumane and heartless?

This appalling case took place in Chengdu, China last year. Noticing that his newly purchased cellphone had bite marks all over it, the owner assumed they were coming from the six-weeks-old puppy and decided to teach this harmless animal a lesson he would never forget. The owner proceeded to pour scalding water over the puppy, before tossing him out of the house, leaving him on the streets in a pain most of us cannot endure.

Many people passed by and did not stop to help the wounded creature, who was howling in despair. Thankfully, a 30-year-old woman named Yan Yingying spotted the puppy and decided to help. She picked up the wounded animal and rushed him to the vet’s office, where she paid for his entire treatment. While others ignored his plight, Ms Yingying saved the puppy’s life. She named him Tuffy.

Vets were deeply shocked when they saw Tuffy and stated they had never witnessed an animal this badly mistreated.

Slowly but surely, Tuffy started feeling better and the support around him was simply fantastic. Animals Asia, a well known animal rights group, also got involved and helped with Tuffy's recovery. After months of treatment, Tuffy has finally recovered both psysically (except for a few obvious scars) and mentally. He is now a happy pup, enjoying life for the first time.

However, because China does not have any animal protection laws whatosover, Tuffy’s previous owner will never be held accountable for his despicable actions. Something that sounds unacceptable in Western Europe and North America, but this is the startling reality in Chinese society. Police never investigate such issues and charges are therefore never brought against the perpetrators.

In our view, it is absolutely unacceptable for someone capable of causing so much pain to a harmless animal to walk away free. The need for animal rights in China has never been more stringent. Without a relevant legislation, hope is lost for all the animals in China. There are hundreds of mistreated puppies and dogs just like Tuffy – these helpless and defenseless souls will never get any justice. Their attackers are free to strike again whenever they please, knowing they will get away with it due to proper legislation.

Tuffy must be the voice for all the Chinese animals, victims of the dog meat trade and unspeakable neglect. Support animal rights in China, in Tuffy’s honour, and ensures that whoever eats or mistreats an animal in China is punished!
