The Svalbard is an archipelago that belongs to Norway, situated in the
Arctic Ocean, midway between continental Norway and the North Pole.
The place is visited by both tourists and wildlife photographers and
the main reason for their stay is to see the polar bears. While most of us
imagine polar bears as photogenic, playful, fun to watch, the reality is
extremely different.
Although scientists point out that the bear population on the island
is doing well, the real situation is quite the opposite, as the photo above
perfectly illustrates.
How can a bear population be doing well when there are less and less
females and cubs? Some bears have a body index of just 2 on a scale from 1 to
5?
Climate change is as present as ever. Summers have never been more
warner, with ice packs vanishing in record speed. With the ice retreating each
year, more bears tend to get stuck on land, where there is less food.
In the first year, mothers lose their first cub. In the second year,
they lose their second (and last) cub. Fat mothers with chubby cubs are an
extremely rare encounter on the archipelago. The polar bear population is
dwindeling as we speak and authorities are not doing anything!
Show your support now to ensure the Norwegian authorities will step
up and help the polar bear in Svalbard. This matter needs their urgent
attention. Help put pressure on the authorities and get them to act and do
everything in their power to provide a better life for the polar bears.
