An undercover investigation conducted by Animals International has
uncovered the terrible fate of the cattle that are exported from Romania to the
Middle East.
Statistics indicate that Romania is Europe’s largest live exporter
and the top exporter of baby animals in the world. What the animals of Romania
are forced to endure once they are shipped out of the country is really hard to
put into words. Countries in the Middle East – with no animal welfare
regulations whatsoever – are the main customers for Romania’s animals.
They are shipped there by sea. Once they arrive, the nightmare
starts – the animals are routinely hit with metal rods, tormented, have their
tails twisted or even broken and, probably the worst of it all, are slashed
with knives while still alive and left to bleed until they give their last
breath. Some of this happens right in broad daylight, during the Festival of
Sacrifice, which takes place each year in Jordan. Animals are routinely stuffed
into car boots or are put down without remorse in people’s backyards.
Live exports serve only one purpose: to make rich companies even
richer. All the profits go to such corporations, while endangering local jobs.
In Romania, farmers are struggling to make ends meet, while other countries are
scoring huge profits as a result of this cruel trade.
The shipping of these innocent animals to be terminated in the most
inhumane ways needs to be stopped as soon as possible. These helpless babies
deserve a chance to a normal, decent life. Help end Romania’s live exports,
alongside the cruelty that goes with it.
