A Tibetan ethnic living in China has recently been the subject of a heated debate after Chinese authorities have accused him of several unknown charges believed to be related to separatism. The alleged perpetrator is Druklo (pen-name Shokjang) – foreign media reports that his charged have never been released to the public up to this point and his terrified and worried family was only informed about the sentencing two days before the crucial hearing. Moreover, it has been reported that Druklo has been constantly denied access to a lawyer. There is absolutely no question that this is a blatant and outrageous violation of human rights.
Druklo is the author of a popular blog in which has criticized the Chinese government on how Tibetans ethnics are mistreated on numerous occasions. After posting an article about the failed Tibetan uprising against the Chinese in 1959, his website was shut down and the blogger was arrested without anyone knowing. Druklo was detained in the past as well for co-edition a literary magazine in college that referred to the protests held by the Tibetan community in 2008.
I have no doubt that Druklo is a victim of his outspoken personality and his ethnicity. I am extremely disturbed by the fact that Chinese authorities still regard the freedom of speech as a crime. Every body is entitled to an opinion and each view – as long as it express with decency – should be respected.
While I understand that relations between
Tibetans and Chinese are not amicable, charging and detaining Druklo for
absolutely no justification is a disgrace for the entire Chinese justice system.
Such decisions clearly go against international human rights and should be
rescinded immediately.
Druklo is entitled to a fair trail and, most important, should have the right to consult with an attorney by all means.
