The video of an animal control officer severely mishandling a mother dog has been published on Faebook by Aylena Gonzalez.
The incident took place on the streets of Vedado in Havana, Cuba last September and shows an Animal Control employee (Zoonosis in Spanish) disposing of a mother dog in the most ruthless way possible. The cowardly man can be seen grabbing the mother dog by the scruff as the defenseless animal howls in pain. She has no chance to escape as she is taken away from her precious babies. Outraged citizens gather nearby and urge the man to stop, but the employee doesn’t seem to care and asks the onlookers to mind their own business while pointing a threatening finger in their direction. Moments after, the man tosses the crying dog in the back of a van (through a tiny hole), then drives off like nothing was wrong.
This is the sad reality of how strays are treated in Cuba. This
incident comes shortly after the United States and Cuba have announced the
re-openening of diplomatic ties. Cuba is now expecting a massive surge in
American tourists, with American Airlines already announcing a direct flight
from Los Angeles to Havana.
Cuban – US relations have improved significantly over he past few years. Americans are now encouraged to visit the communist island as direct flights have been introduced from the United States to Cuba after a long pause. To prepare for the upcoming arrival of American tourists, Cuban authorities have dispatched Zoonosis workers all across the country with one clear mission: to eliminate as many strays as they can in an attempt to keep the streets clean.
It is disappointing to learn that inhumane practices are still carried out in a country that aims to modernize itself.
I have to say I had plans to visit Cuba, but if this is the cost of my journey there, then forget it! No dog should be subjected to such treatment ever. And there are thousands of them that are dealt with in the same manner.
We, the undersigned, will be imposing a complete boycott on Cuba until they find a humane solution to the problem and I urge everyone reading this to do the same. We hereby pledge not to visit the country and avoid buying their famous products.
Please sign the petition to let officials know that we, the
undersigned, consider view these actions as unacceptable and demand a significant
improvement in animal welfare on the island!
