Although the cow has a traditional status as a respect creature of
God in Hinduism, cow slaughter is still legal in some parts of India.
In 2005, the Supreme Court of India decided to uphold the
constitutional validity of the laws that forbid the slaughter of cows and
calves which had been enforced by numerous state governments. At present, 24
out of the 29 states in India have regulations in place that forbid cows and
calves from being taken to abattoirs or being sold. As we speak, the states of
Kerala, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura
and Sikkim has absolutely no restrictions concerning the consumption of cattle.
Numerous illegal abattoirs have opened in various states across
India and efforts to shut them down permanently have been highly ineffective.
Such facilities also operate in major cities such as Chennai and Mumbai.
Estimates that as many as 30, 000 illegal abattoirs continue their activity
unabiased each day – as opposed to just 3, 600 legal facilities.
The photo attached to this petition speaks volumes about the plight
of these innocent cows. The pain and suffering of these creatures can hardly be
described in words, as they are taken to an abbatoir while being hung upside
down to the back of a truck, sometimes for hours. Just imagine yourself sitting
in that position for so much time, how would you feel? The pain felt by these
animals is just as intense and real and such pictures are truly outrageous.
Help put an end to cow slaughter in India once and for all and
demand that immediate action to close all illegal abattoirs is taken
immediately. In addition, we demand that the prohibition of cattle meat
consumption and sale is extended to all the states of India.
Help stop the suffering of these beautiful animals and help ban the
slaughter of cows and calves in India for good!
