The shocking video of a camel being cut open with a huge knife at a
public event in Iran is making the rounds on social media. The footage shows
how a large number of people gather around to see the camel being sacrificed in
the name of religion. The men in charge of the operation tie the camel up,
before slicing the animal, as the crowd makes a large, cheerful noise. Moments
after, the camel falls to the ground and bleeds on the tarmac. But the wound is
not deep enough and the terrified animal is able to get up and escape, as the
crowd starts running and shouting in panic.
The camel leaves a trail of blood behind, as it runs away in
complete distress, hitting several cars during the process.
Iran currently has no animal protection laws and none of the people
responsible for this will ever be held accountable. But it is not just animals
such as camles who have the suffer the indifference of the authorities or the
general population. Cats and dogs are severely mistreated on a daily basis. For
instance, in many parts of the country street dogs are regarded as ‘vermin’ and
routinely poisoned. In Tehran, local authorities are screening people that are
walking their pets on the street or in parks and confiscate them without
hesitation. The pets are taken to the local pound, where they are euthanized
without any justification. There are numerous cases of cruelty to animals and
none of them is ever investigated.
These are just a few examples of why Iran is in desperate need to
adopt animal welfare laws. The country’s president, Hassan Rouhani, has made
important steps in connecting with the United States and other Western
countries. By lifting the decade old trade embargo, Iran is looking towards a
new era of Western cooperation. We, the undersigned, sincerely hope that Iran
will learn from Western countries to treat animals with dignity and respect and
therefore implement animal welfare laws as soon as possible.
Help stop this senseless and needless suffering of our beloved
animals in Iran. Support the animal rights laws in Iran now by signing and
sharing this petition.
Thank you.
