Everyone knows it as the Island of Gods – ironically, because man’s best friend and one of God’s creatures receives one of the worst and inhumane treatments there can be on Earth.
Bali boasts beautiful, exclusive beaches, with white sands and gorgeous waters. It is a coveted destination for many tourists worldwide. Most of them however do not know the island’s dark secret: a very powerful appetite for dog meat.
Estimates indicate that as many as 100, 000 dogs are skinned alive and cooked for their meat and served in numerous dog meat warungs (cafes) across the island.
According to the Bali Animal Welfare Association, all of the canines that are grabbed off the streets and sold to restaurants are inhumanely put down. For instance, 70 per cent of the dogs are cut open with knives and about 25 per cent of them are poisoned and left to perish in agony. Dogs are sold to restaurants for a sum between $1 and $3 – this is how much a dog’s life is worth on the island (outrageous!).
On average, a café in Bali cooks anywhere between ½ and 7 dogs per day.
Statistics also point out that most of the people that consume dog meat are native Balinese or come from other parts of Indonesia (the island is actually part of Indonesia).
There have been numerous myths surrounding the dogs on the island and Bali Animal Welfare Association has tried to debunk some of them. Authorities claim that the dogs represent a major threat for tourists due to their aggressive nature. The fact is that the dogs are not actually aggressive by nature, it’s just that they are not used to direct contact with humans and therefore are a bit reluctant to interact with people. Authorities have also claimed that dogs need to be euthanized because there is no chance they can be tamed and transformed into pets. The fact is that dogs are highly intelligent creatures, capable of learning appropriate behavior and how to properly interact with humans.
Authorities have always chosen the easy way out and have ordered numerous euthanasia campaigns and have allowed dog meat traders to have their way. No constructive and humane approach to this issue has been taken thus far, which is an absolute shame.
Please sign the petition now and demand a complete ban of the vile dog meat trade that is flourishing in Bali right now.
Take action now – sign the petition and pledge not to visit the island of Bali until our demands are taken into account and dogs are no longer cooked for their meat and get treated with the love and respect they deserve.
