While the polar bears are known as one of nature’s most majestic animals, China’s thrill-seeking nouveau riche are being offered trip of a lifetime: hunting down endangered polar bears in Canada.
A 10-day trips costs about $80, 000 and includes business class tickets to Canada, accommodation at a five star hotel, training, the services of a taxidermist and a personalized photo album and DVD film of their ‘exotic’ adventure. After the hunt, the polar bears are usually transformed into rugs only to be brought back to China and put on display in the houses of these wealthy business men.
One of the Chinese agencies that offers such packages is called ‘I Love Hunting Club’. (Click HERE for their website)
The club’s owner, American hunting specialist Scott Lupien defends this practice: ‘If a male runs into a female with cubs, it will certainly attack the cubs. Hunting males actually helps the young population to survive. The animal rights people are aware of this situation, but they fail to admit it. And if you believe the ice caps are melting, as some claim, that the bears will perish anyway, so we might as well hunt them!’
Probably the most surprising fact is that this affair is perfectly legal in Canada! Despite being classified as an endangered species by US authorities, Canada remains the only country in the world that allows 500 polar bears to be hunting by foreign trophy hunters. Meanwhile, hunting polar bears is strictly forbidden in Norway! A recent study also points out that Canadians are willing to splash out $420, 000 per polar bear to save them.
We, the undersigned, feel that in today’s civilized society, taking an active part in the eradication of an animal species is unacceptable. However, by allowing this senseless hunting of polar bears, the Canadian government is doing this exact thing.
While
we cannot fight the challenges brought by climate change, it is in our power to
stop the unsustainable hunting of polar bears!
Please sign the petition and ask the Canadian government to take action now before it’s not too late. The future of polar bears should constitute a top priority and a key environmental issue for each country! Canada should follow suite nonetheless.
