The shocking video of a German Shepherd tied dog being tied up and
cooked for a meal has emerged online. The terrible incident unfolded in
Vietnam, a place where the dog meat trade is flourishing and there are no
animal protection laws whatsoever. Support the petition to make a difference
for all the animals in the country, who desperately need our help.
The footage is about five minutes long and is extremely difficult to
watch. The men can be seen wrapping the dog’s muzzle off with a plastic rope, to
keep the pooch quiet. Most likely, the dog was someone’s pet and was snatched
from his loving owners only to be prepared for dinner. A handful of people are
involved in the operation. After the dog has been completely immobilized, he is
transported to an improvised outdoor kitchen, where he is turned upside down
and poked with bladed object several times, before having his throat cut. This
is the end of the video, but we can easily imagine what happens next.
Vietnam has the highest incident of dog meat consumed per capita in
the world. Millions of dogs are cooked each year in this country as dog meat
can be easily purchased for basically any place, for instance in public markets
(just imagine going to the grocery store and purchasing dog meat), in
restaurants all across the country as well as on roadstalls.
The government has done little to stem the flourishing trade. The
only measure imposed was a ban on dog meat imports from Thailand – a decision
that proved to have just a short term positive effect, because traders quickly
discovered other methods to fill the gap in the supply chain and meet
increasing demand in the country.
A huge chunk of the dogs that are victims of this gruesome trade are
stolen pets and owners are now afraid to even leave their pets out of their
sight, out of fear they might never see them again.
This despicable trade has been allowed to continue unabiased in
spite of the fact that dog meat is widely considered a health hazard and has
been linked to various serious diseases such as rabies, salmonella and E.coli
bacteria. In other words, the government is knowingly and willingly endangering
the lives of its citizens and causing tremendous suffering to millions of
innocent dogs.
Support an end to the dog meat trade in Vietnam and stop the
suffering of millions of animals. Pictures like the ones presented in this
petition have become all too common in the country. We must put in our best
efforts to ensure that these dogs get a chance to a normal and decent life!
