The Municipality of Shiraz, Iran, has taken steps to initiate a mass
culling campaign that will see thousands of dogs injected with acid, in an
ill-considered attempt to control the dog overpopulation.
As a video on YouTube depicts, the dogs are left to suffer in extreme pain by merciless public workers, who are like robots, expressing absolutely no emotion and seemingly caring less about what is unfolding in front of their eyes. Dogs are howling in distress as they are held to the ground with a pole around their neck while poison is introduced in their bodies. Their ultimate demise is close. In just a matter of minutes, they are no longer alive. After that, their lifeless bodies are dragged around the yard with a rope. But hundreds of other dogs await the same grim fate each day.
Outraged animal rights activists have indicated that the authorities are paying these people about $4 for each dog that is put down.
These strays have no fault that the situation has escalated up to this point. The local authorities are the only party responsible for this situation – they have willingly allowed the population to grow beyond any control and have failed to take any steps whatsoever to address this situation.
Help me ask the Shiraz officials to implement humane methods to deal with this problem. Spay-and-neuter schemes are cheaper and much more efficient for controlling overpopulation; in addition, building shelters to house stray dogs is essential, as well as starting adoption schemes and informing the general population about the benefits of having dogs.
Show your support and demand these measures be applied! POISON is
not the solution!
