After a recent case of a person being infected with rabies in the municipality of Quilpué in Chile, the infamous mayor of Antofagasta, Karen Rojo, (who was appointed for a second term in office in last October's elections) has decided to take matters into her own hands and publicly declared she is considering a mass euthanasia of all street dogs.
In her statement, the mayor explained that euthanizing dogs selectively is the most efficient control measure at this point.
Here is a snippet of her statement: I will not allow people to continue to get ill and die while no one takes charge. It is my duty as a mayor to take action. When people die after being bitten by stray dogs, no central authority will take responsibility. But I am going to. I am not saying that selective euthanasia is the ultimate solution, but until clear policies are established and someone takes full responsibility for the animals that live on the streets, I believe this is the right course of action.
The local press has deemed Ms. Rojo’s administration of the city located in northern Chile as shameful.
We, the undersigned, are deeply disturbed and disappointed by the views and plans presented by Mayor Rojo and demand that this decision is rescinded as soon as possible. Just because stray dogs do not have a home does not give anyone the right to take their lives. There are plenty of other humane and more effective methods of dealing with stray animals than euthanasia, methods that have been applied in other cities and countries that have been dealing with stray overpopulation.
Did you know that The Netherlands does not have any stray dogs on the streets? The government has transformed this issue into a top priority by implementing spay and neuter campaigns and building shelters to house the animals; officials have also initiated numerous adoption campaigns, informing the population about the benefits of owning companion animals; nonetheless, authorities have increased taxes on breeders and imports of dogs. If these measure have succeeded in an entire country, there is no reason why a similar approach will not be successful in the municipality of Antofagasta.
Please be a voice for the strays – euthanizing them is not an
option! Take action now and help ensure mayor Rojo does not carry out her
diabolical plan!
