7.715 NEEDED
Dan Paun is running for mayor in Braila, a town in the Eastern part
of Romania. Up until this point, he has had quite a low profile campaign and no
concrete measures stood out.
But that all changed when Mr. Paun gave his thoughts about how he
plans to deal with the stray dog situation – a problematic issue that has been
hitting the city like a plague for over the last few years.
In a nutshell, Mr. Paun believes that all people who feed street
dogs should be fined with 5, 000 lei (about US $1, 100).
Here is what the politician had to say about his proposal:
“In my view, throwing food in public places, on public domain is
like throwing toxic substances, and the punishment must be steep. I would fine
whoever leaves food on the pavement with at least 5, 000 lei. If the local
police would issue five such fines and the local media would pick up the story,
I would guarantee you people will think twice before throwing out food in
public places rather than being fined 5, 000 lei†Mr. Paun stated. He concluded
that the issue of stray dog overpopulation would be resolved if the animals did
not have a source of food anymore.
He claims that unless people stop feeding them, there is no fixing
the problem of stray animals.
“You need to work on the basis – which is their food supply. If we don’t do that, more and more stray dogs will surface. If we pick all the strays that are currently on the streets, others will take their place. It will always be like this as long as people give them food. Everyone knows how things work in the neighborhoods: you pick up five aggressive dogs and take them to the pound, and others will come and take their place, it’s obvious†Mr. Paun concluded.
This is not the first time a politician comes up with such useless
proposals. Last year, a councilor from Medias proposed that all dogs should
have their vocal cords removed, so they are not able to bark any longer and
thus bother neighbors. The politician’s proposal never even made it for discussion
in the city council.
We, the undersigned, are extremely disappointed by the statements
recently issued by Mr. Dan Paun. It has become quite obvious that Mr. Paun has
no clear vision on how to run a city and has no knowledge whatsoever about
humanely fixing the issue of stray dogs. Leaving the street dogs to starve
until they perish is certainly not a viable option. What this city needs to fix
the problem is to implement spay-and-neuter schemes, to prevent dogs from
breeding; in addition, implementing adoption schemes and working with reputable
organizations that are willing to help should also constitute major points of
focus.
Mr. Paun’s views are shallow and ignorant. The great city of Braila
does not deserve an incompetent mayor like Mr. Paun.
Please show your support and ask Dan Paun to retract his statements
and consider implementing humane solutions to feeding the strays if he is
elected mayor.
Please take action now!
