The Ogun festival takes place every year in the town of Ife, Oyo State, Nigeria. The religious festival lasts for three whole days and nights and is celebrated by the Yoruba people.
The festival is all about commemorating the god Orun, a mythical leader and his son, Oranmiyan, who later becomes king of Yorubaland.
The supreme leader of these group of people is Olodumare. He holds all the keys to the power and is the ultimate giver of all life. Just as God, Olodumare is not defined by gender and all things that exists on Earth, including both natural and supernatural realities, are believed to be the work of Olodumare.
The town is always in a festive mode when the celebrations begins. It all starts with a vigil known as Ilagu of Asoro – which begins at midnight. Blacksmiths donate several iron bell-gongs which are later used for the ritual. During the process, two dogs are prepared for sacrifice. As the photos above show, the defenseless animals are scared stiff and anxious to get out. But this is impossible. The organizer gives the OK and two of his men start pulling the dog in two separate directions – until the dogs cease to exist. They are literally shredded into pieces, all in the name of religion. The images are daunting indeed and I seem to be unable to get them out of my head.
Shortly after the sacrificial process has been successfully carried out, people start to clap and cheer ignorantly, singing songs to Olodumare. It is a true celebration and no one actually cares that two dogs lost their lives amid unspeakable suffering.
Underage children are also allowed to participate at the ceremony. I cannot even begin to imagine what lessons they are taught at such a tender age. They will grow up believing that harming animals is the right thing to do, because their supreme leader told them to.
This insanity has been allowed to continue for far too long! Authorities must intervene and prevent further loss of life. The 2017 edition is just around the corner and we strongly oppose any dog sacrifice in the name of religion!
Please a voice for those defenseless canines and share this petition far and wide.
