A cab driver in Vietnam earns an average salary of $80 per month. In order to try and make a quick buck and increase their revenue, more and more taxi drivers are shipping stolen dogs to abattoirs to be skinned alive and cooked for their meat.
The latest incident took place at the end of April, when a dog meat trader and a taxi driver were pulled over National Highway 14B, in the central part of Vietnam.
Police forced the car to a stop and discovered 16 stolen the dogs in the vehicle’s trunk.
The trader, 23-year-old Nguyen Van Vinh confessed to snatching the dogs in the Dong Giang District earlier that week and claimed he was going to sell them to an abattoir in Dai Loc District and hired a cab driver to help him with the job.
The driver claimed he has no involvement in this operation whatsoever, but he surely must have known what he was carrying.
Van Vinh also had two accomplices – both of them were riding on motorbikes behind the cab, but managed to escape when police pulled the car over.
Van Vinh has been charged, but penalties for those involved in the
dog meat trade are just symbolic – and usually consist in a warning or a small
fine.
Dog theft it thriving in Vietnam and more and more dogs are snatched from their beloved owners each year. Pet ownership has grown in Vietnam significantly, but now people are afraid to leave their pets unattended out of fear they will not see them when they get home. Once traders get their hands on the dogs, there is no coming back. The supply chain is well organized and dogs are sold to abattoirs or restaurants in a very small period of time.
The unreglated dog meat trade makes millions of victims each year and the government has failed to contain this vile industry.
Please take action and urge the government to do more to end this despicable commerce and crack down on traders and restaurants owners.
The dogs involved in this ruthless trade were dragged into this against their will and deserve a chance to a normal life!
Do not turn your back on them, because they need us more than ever! A bill that would see dog meat banned all across the country must be adopted by authorities in Vietnam as soon as possible.
