2.098 NEEDED
This stray dog was found on the side of the road, near a construction site in a major city in India. The dog had crawled into a hole and had given up on life completely. His face was eaten off by maggots. He was in the worst shape ever when volunteers with the Animal Aid Unlimited India came to help.
His face was severely wounded and completely infested – a volunteer describes the situation.
Initial assessment revelaed that euthanasia was the best option for this pooch. But something in the dog’s spirit convinced volunteers to give the dog another chance.
Volunteers initially applied powder to remove the maggots. After all of them were gone, they started cleaning the huge wound. A large part of the dog’s skull was exposed and it looked like both eyes were gone. After a few days, he started eating and his left eye appeared. After an additional three months, Kalu ended up growing a new face. Volunteers describe Kalu as the greatest recovery they have witnessed. Kalu is now as happy as any dog can be, all thanks to the wonderful volunteers of Animal Aid Unlimited. (see photos of the new Kalu below)
Kalu’s situation is not an isolated one. Millions of stray dogs all across India share the same plight. Few of them are lucky to be rescued. Those strays are forced to make ends meet on a daily basis. They live as if that was the last day of their life. It’s a real challenge to find constant food and water, as well as proper shelter, not to mention that they receive no medical attention.
This is not the life these strays deserve. Authorities need to take a stand and implement Kalu’s law: a nationwide ordinance that will help India’s stray. Building shelters to house them and implementing spay-and-neuter campaigns to keep the dogs from breeding should be national priorities. At each street corner you go in India, you will come across a group of strays. This not normal! These strays don’t belong on the street. They have the right to a better life.
Rescues such as Animal Aid have limited resources and are able to save only a small fraction of the strays that need help. It’s up to the public authorities to do the rest of the job! This is not happening at the moment!
Please take action and urge the Indian government to help the
strays!
