This heartbreaking and outrageous photo was snapped in the outskirts
of Tehran, Iran’s capital city. It is the place where people leave their
unwanted items behind. Someone who doesn’t even deserved to be a human being
thought this would be an ideal place to put up a huge stick between two rocks
and hang a mother dog and her puppies. I counted 7 defenseless puppies that
stood no chance in front of their ruthless attackers.
Unfortunately, such types of incidents are all too common in a
country where there is absolutely no respect for animals. Even the authorities
have initiated numerous campaigns to cull stray dogs using various inhumane
methods.
I have closely followed Iran’s politicial progress since
international sanctions have been lifted. Just recently, Iran hosted a new set
of domestic elections which saw moderate conservatives and reformists win big.
Since the deal with the United Nations, Western companies have since flooded
Iran and are looking to do serious business there. Iran will be able to sell
oil on the international market after over 20 years. It is a huge moment for
the country. Iran’s economy is set to open up widely and poised to improve
significantly in the next few years.
Key political leaders – including President Hassan Rohani – have
made no secret of aiming to bring Western culture to the country as soon as
possible.
In Western countries dogs are treated like cherished family members,
they are not considered ‘vermin’ – as many people in Iran (authorities
included) view them.
Iran must move closer to the West by adopting an animal welfare legislation
that would give all animals in the county the much-needed protection. Such a
law is essential, because attackers like the one in this case will never be
brought to justice in the current system, which is simply unacceptable. A
modern society must offer protection for all its residents, including dogs –
who are sentient beings, nonetheless.
Please show your support for animal welfare laws in Iran that will
see authorities treat stray dogs humanely and those who harm animals punished
severely!
