If you are wondering what the true price of leather is, animal
rights groups PETA has an answer for you. An undercover investigation carried
out at several cattle ranches in Brazil that supply JBS S.A. – one of the
biggest leather processors in the world – has uncovered the life of misery
these beautiful animals are forced to endure.
Their pain and suffering is really hard to put into words, as disturbing footage shows how cruel employees would face brand these gentle animals, use electroshocks and pound them repeatedly, before finally putting them down (usually by slicing their necks). Their life is short and miserable. Footages have shown how calves are dragged away from their mothers and immobilized to the ground, usually by having their necks twisted. In one particularly disturbing scene, a baby cow is yanked up by her ears and tail in an attempt to get her on the move. The helpless animal screams in pain, but is powerless to resist her attackers. As standard procedures, workers also make holes in their ears without using any anaesthetic. When cows refuse to obey, they are kicked to the ground and disciplined.
Their skin is processed and used to make leather interiors used by major car companies such as Toyota. So if you are buying a Toyota vehicle, this is what you are supporting!
The PETA report shows that it usually takes about three adult cows’ hides to cover the entire interior of a medium-sized car. JBS S.A. has produced 10 million hides in 2015 alone, according to statistics.
Please be aware before purchasing a vehicle of the pain and suffering endured by these gentle animals in the hands of the auto industry.
Ask Toyota to stop supporting animal cruelty and replace their leather interiors with vegan ones for all their cars. Please sign the petition and denounce Toyota for what they are doing!
