These disturbing pictures depict a biology class at the Colégio
Luterano Concórdia in the municipality of Canos, Brazil. The photos were posted
on social media and instantly went viral; they were denounced by countless
outraged netizens.
The photos show the students performing brutal tests on innocent
cats and seemingly enjoying themselves. The origin of these cats currently
remains unknown. It was also revealed that this biology class was an optional
course for third year high school students.
According to current laws in Brazil, the use of animals in
experiments is only limited to Higher Education facilities.
A concerned mother came forward and stated that her child had told
her biology lessons were extremely pleasant as of late, without getting into
the details that innocent cats were used for testing.
Two local animal welfare associations have already filed a complaint
to the local authorities. Police will be investigating whether cruelty to
animals actually occurred in the biology laboritories and if this institution
is licensed to practice such kind of experiments.
In a public statement, the institution states that it does not
perform experiments or demonstrations with live animals in any sort of
activities and has a strict no-vivisection policy, practices which are contray
to the moral and Christian values, which constitute the Pillars of Lutheran
education.
We, the undersigned, are appalled and outraged by what the students
from Colégio Luterano Concórdia are being taught and demand that the biology
laboratory is shut down as soon as possible. In addition, we ask the Ministry
of Education from Brazil to consider reviewing the law and ban the use of
animals for experiments from all educational institutions in the country. In
these modern times, there are plenty of alternatives for teaching students,
methods that do not involve testing on innocent animals.
Brazil has recently approved a ban on animal testing for cosmetic purposes. We sincerely hope a ban on cruel animal experiments in all educational facilities will also be approved.
Let us make our voices heard and make animal experiments a thing of
the past in all Brazilian institutions!
