Dog meat is one of the most popular dishes on the menu in Cambodia. Such type of meat can be found in restaurants, in large open markets or in improsived stalls strategically placed on the side of the road. It is also a custom for people to cook dog meat by themselves. Cambodia has a large stray dog population, which represents a good opportunity for a barbecue, in eyes of many citizens.

Numerous videos posted on Facebook and Youtube depict the inhumane treatment of the dogs. In the video attached to the petition, you can see how a group of teenagers is barbecuing a dog without remorse. They all gather around the fire, laughing and giggling and ejoying themselves. They have absolutely no problem with eating man’s best friend.

Exclusive: Punish thugs that cut dog’s ears off and posed for photos!

As previously mentioned, this is hardly an isolated incident. Thousands of dogs share the same grim fate each year.

Meanwhile, the central government has done nothing to intervene, on the contrary, it has only encouraged it.

For instance, one of the country’s main tourist attractions is UNESCO World Heritage Listed 12th century Angkor Wat Temple in Siem Reap. The area is now also famous for its numerous restaurants that serve dog meat, extremely popular with tourists from China, South Korea and Vietnam – countries with a great tradition of dog meat consumption. A plate of dog meat costs around $1 and is served with Anchor beer.

The consumption of dog meat is still legal in Cambodia. There are no animal rights laws in the country, which means thousands of innocent dogs have no protection – and are poised to suffer badly in the name of tradition, as many residents believe that eating dog meat will shield the human body from any illness (a theory which has received little scientific support).

Please take a stand against the horrible treatment of dogs in Cambodia and demand an end to the dog meat trade.

Urge the government to review the law and make it illegal to eat dogs everywhere in the country and impose strict penalties for those who do not respect the law.

The dogs of Cambodia need our help. Please sign and share the petition.
