A
video that reveals how stray dogs are treated on the streets of Kathmandu,
Nepal’s capital, has been circulating on YouTube.
Military
officials are seen repeateadly hitting the strays with heavy sticks. The
distressed dogs try to get away, but are stopped in their tracks by government
representatives. The dogs how in distress as they are hit again and again. Although they are pinned to the ground and unable to escape, the heartless soldiers continue the attack without any form of remorse. Multiply the video attached to the petition by a couple of hundred times and you will get a strong picture of the desperate situation of the strays in Kathmandu.
We,
the undersigned, strongly condemn these medieval practices and urge the Nepalese government to find other methods of dealing with the problem of stray dogs.
Building animal shelters for the strays and implementing adopting schemes have been methods well proven in other countries that have dealt with similar problems and do not come with a steep price. Animals could be taken
to specialized shelters, where they are looked after until animal lovers adopt
them. In addition, since Nepal has a high animal abandonment rate, proper
educational programs that teach people the benefits of adopting pets must come
into force.
This
is a much more efficient solution that having military personnel chasing the
strays in the middle of the street.
Please
sign the petition and urge both central and local authorities to come up with a
plan meant to improve animal welfare as soon as possible. The stray dogs of
Katmandu are in deer need of our help!
