Pregnant dog blown up with fireworks gets no justice! Support Chola’s law now!

In one of the worst cases of cruelty to animals, a group of heartless monsters taped a pregnant dog’s mouth shut with fireworks and light the defenseless animal up. The distressed mother dog was left with a bunch of missing teeth and a shattered jaw amid the explosion.

This shocking incident unfolded in the municipality of Torreon, a major metropolitan area situated in the central part of Mexico. Fortunately, the female dog, dubbed Chola, was spotted by several concerned citizens and immediately transported to the hospital. Vets were in disbelief seeing the injuries of the pregnant canine. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the litter of puppies the dog was carrying did not survive the terrible attack.

After a thorough examination, vets also concluded it was highly likely Chola had been used as bait to train less aggressive breeds to fight, since numerous bite wounds were visible on her entire body. However, after she became pregnant, she was deemed of no longer use and her owners tried to get rid of her in the most despicable and inhumane way.

Chola had to through months of pain and suffering before fully recovering. Since she could not swallow food, she was fed liquidized baby food. Staff were forced to avoid contact with her as much as possible, because unless she was tranquillised, she refused to be checked out, probably out of fear she and her puppies were still in danger.

In spite of public pressure, the authorities did not even bother to launch an investigation into this matter and, as a result, Chola’s attackers are still out there, free to harm again at will.

This is just one of the many shocking cases involving cruelty to animals that occurred in Mexico, but Chola’s story perfectly illustrates the need for tougher animal welfare laws in the country. As things currently stand, the animals in Mexico are defenseless and do not have a voice. In spite of numerous promises of crackdown on dog fights, such events are still happening on a large scale in many parts of the country; numerous illegal horse abattoirs continue to operate throughout Mexico. Add the numerous cases of cruelty to animals that occur almost on a daily basis and you get a recipe for disaster when it comes to animal welfare. I would like to mention just a few of these cases, to get viewers a better understanding of the sense of urgency these animals face: just recently I read a story about a dog that was tied up and pounded until its eyes popped out; a woman threw her dog off a 5^th story window because she did not want to keep the pet anymore; a cruel individual was filmed cutting a puppy’s ears with a pair of scissors. All these perpetrators have escape unpunished and justice will never be served.

A law to protect innocent animals such as Chola must come into force nationwide as soon as possible. These repeated cases of abuse have exposed the deeply flawed system of Mexico, with extremely lenient laws and a complete lack of interest coming from law enforcement and the judicial system to resolve cases involving cruelty to animals.

We, the undersigned, demand stricter laws against animal cruelty in Mexico – including mandatory jail time for anyone convicting of harming an animal. In addition, we urge the country’s lawmakers to consider implementing special animal police squads with the mission of patrolling the streets of major cities and tackle animal cruelty cases.
