I have been closely watching the recent
riots in Charlotte, North Carolina as they unfolded. There is an ongoing
discussion in the United States about how members of the African-American
community are being treated by police officers. What no one is talking about is
the fact that our beloved pets share the same fate. There have been countless
pets that have been shot by police officers for absolutely no reason. Their
lives does not count in the eyes of these officers. I decided to start this
petition and demand a profound and meaningful reform in the way police officers
treat our pets. These people have sworn to serve and protect and that should
include our pets as well. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Too much loss of
life has occurred and it all needs to stop.
Over the past few years, there have been
countless cases of pets being callously put down after encounters with police
officers. The explanation is always the same: the officers were trying to
protect their lives, as the dogs posed a serious threat and needed to be dealt
with accordingly (by ending their lives that is). Even when CCTV cameras have
shown that the pets were not posing any threat to the officers, police
superiors tried to cover up the case and sweep everything under the rug. Every
time such an unfortunate incident occurred, authorities have promised to
drastically sanction the people involved. In fact, it was all a public
relations stunt. There have been few cases in which officers have actually lost
their jobs over such an incident. The people involved have, in most occasions,
been handed a temporary suspension and a warning. That is all.
The need for a change in the system is
obvious. Please support this petition and help keep our pets safe from the
police – the very people that are supposed to protect them!. Support a federal
law that would require mandatory training lessons for each police officer in
the United States, so law enforcement officials can learn how to correctly and
adequately deal with such encounters and prevent further loss of life.
We owe it to all the harmless pets that have
been needlessly put down by police officers to sign and share the petition.
Support mandatory training session and ensure that our pets will be kept out of
harm’s way.
