Most people in Thailand do not care about dog, unfortunately, and this latest incident only comes to support this theory.
This poor dog, who is blind, was run over by a car on the streets of Bangkok. It is not known if this way an intentional act or not (the dog might have suddenly jumped in front of the car; a thrill-seeking driver might have purposely run over the dog – at this point, both possibilities are on the table). It’s certain, however, that the dog ended up badly wounded. The driver didn’t even bother to look back and see what happened. So did so many bystanders, who went on with their journey as if nothing was wrong.
Finally, this helpless animal was rescued by Change For Asia, an animal welfare group. We are awaiting updates; hopefully the dog will make it and will be able to be re-homed.
The fact that no official authority has moved a muscle for this dog (and many others in this situation) speaks volumes about the interest exhibited towards animal welfare. We demand a chance in the country, because animals deserve better!
First of all, we demand a complete end to the dog meat trade. Pets
are companion animals and not food! Secondly, we demand animal protection laws
that will see reckless drivers or people that intentionally harm animals
punished (either by jail or with huge fines, so they can learn from their
wrongdoing). Thirdly, we demand that Thailand’s government does more to support
animal welfare groups such as Change For Asia in their quest to improve the
lives of the stray animals all across the country.
