While the number of pets in Vietnam is growing, more and more owners are learning about the challenges of having a voiceless companion around them. Pet ownership is extremely difficult, mainly due to the fact that Vietnam is a dog / cat eating country and there are no animal protection laws. There have been numerous cases in which pets have been snatched in right of their owners’ noses and sold to abattoirs for human consumption. No one is ever held accountable.
In Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon) an owner was left in dismay after his pet was attacked and slashed opened by an out-of-control neighbor who didn’t want the dog living next door to him. Other neighbors claim that the dog was treated extremely well and was extremely gentle and playful. This didn’t stop the neighbor from doing what he did. As you can see in the photo, the dog was attacked with a knife that punctured his right eye.
Luckily, the owner was nearby and heard the noises coming from outside; he was able to take the dog to a professional vet in the nick of time. It is a true miracle that the dog survived the heartless attacked. However, the pet now needs to deal with severe infections and will lose sight in his right eye.
The perception that dogs are just food and not pets will be tough to overcome in Vietnam. But authorities are mostly to blame for this conception, as they have done nothing to improve dog/cat welfare in the country. In spite of the official ban on dog and cat meat consumption, the industry is allowed to continue without any complications on the black market. Vietnam needs a special task force that will deal with people in the pet meat trade and will be responsible in apprehending all those involved in the industry. In addition, it has become clear that the country is in need of animal welfare laws that will make harming pets illegal and will allow authorities to pursue charges against the perpetrators, just like laws in many Western countries stipulate.
