The Deopokhari festival is held each year in August in the village of Khokana, in the Kathmandu Valley in central Nepal.
During this ‘cultural’ festival, a live goat is ripped apart by villagers with their bare hands and teeth.
Local people claim that since this event is 900-year-old tradition, it would be wrong to stop now. The festival is meant as a celebration of the Newari tribe, the indigenous residents of the area surrounding the Kathmandu Valley; the festival features music, lots of dancing and food.
The goat, usually six-months old, is tossed into the Deu pond, near the Rudrayani temple, in the center of the village; immediately, nine brave people jump into the pond and begin their quest to sacrifice the defenseless animal. The goat has no chance of survival.
None of the villagers has been able to explain why this sick tradition is carried out each year. It seems that the organizers are simply doing it to entertain themselves.
According to Surajan Shrestha, President of the Animal Rights Club in Nepal, the suffering of these goats is a very long one, as it can take up to 40 minutes for the goat to effectively die. During this period, the goat is left to deal with extreme pain and suffering.
The inhumane ritual was slammed by animal rights group PETA as well. The charity’s director stated that the Kkokana festival showcases a blatant disrespect for life and a disgusting display of cruelty.
We, the undersigned, condemn this senseless act of sacrifice at this festival and hope our voice against cruelty to animals in Nepal will be heard. No animal, especially a baby goat, deserves such treatment, no matter what the circumstances are. And the reasoning that something is good just because it has been going on for century is a completely invalid point. In fact, there can never be a justification for such an inhumane festival to take place, ever!
We sincerely believe that such brutal acts against innocent animals have no place in the modern era and should be banned immediately.
Allowing this practice to continue would be
totally immoral, disgusting and devilish. Support this petition and urge the
authorities in Nepal to put an end to this monstrous festival once and for all.
Thank you.
