Bradford, United Kingdom: The lack of care given by the owner might
have cost a pedigree shih tzu dog his life. Nicole Dheroo’s pet was severely
underweight and could hardly resemble a pet dog.
The authorities found out about the dog’s conditions after a fire at
Dheroo’s home. When firefighters noticed the dog, they immediately alerted the
RSPCA, who took swift action. The dog was rushed to a hospital, where vets
concluded the pooch was days away from passing away.
‘Its hair was so matted you could not see its eyes. The dog was
dehydrated, emaciated and had eye infections. The ribs were clearly
visible. The dog was in such poor
condition that it was unrecognizable as a dog’ RSPCA Inspector Emma Ellis
concluded.
The 23-year-old mother-of-two appeared in front of the Bradford and
Keighley Magistrates’ Court, where she pleaded guilty to three charges – two of
failing to seek appropriate veterinary care and one for not ensuring the
welfare of the animals.
Magistrate Nadine Tidswell claimed it was one of the worst cases of
ill-treatment of an animal she had ever seen.
The court heard that Dheroo purchased the dog in March 2013 for £325
and took care of the dog initially.
In spite of this gross negligence and utter indifference, Magistrates handed out an extremely lenient sentence: the defendent was only given a 23-week jail term, SUSPENDED, (which means Ms. Dheroo will not spend a single day behind bars) as well as a lifetime ban on owning animals. The sentencing is a far cry from justice, I am sure you all will agree.
Unfortunately, the British judicial system has made a habit out of leaving animal abusers to walk with a slap on the wrist. There has been too many cases so far of such people getting away with it and I demand this be stopped as soon as possible.
The need for an in depth and meaningful review of the Animal Welfare Act of 2006 is obvious. The current law states that cruelty to animals carries a maximum penalty of up to six months in jail - but such sentences are only theoretical and virtually never handed out.
We, the undersigned, petition the British government and urge Westminster politicians to review the Animal Welfare Act of 2006 and impose stricter animal rights laws in the United Kingdom and include an automatic lifetime ban on owning pets and mandatory jail time for anyone found guilty of cruelty to animals in British courts.
For the love of all the mistreated animals in the United Kingdom, please sign and share the petition with everyone you know.
