“Torneos de Lazo†are Mexican rodeos, a
tradition that goes way back in time, which has been supposedly banned all
across the country. However, Raul Julia Levy, the son of the late Raul Julia,
has come forward with evidence that indicates such events have been hosted recently
in Yucatan province.
At such public events, where children and
women are allowed to attend, defenseless horses are forced to fight raging bulls;
if the horses somehow survive the fight, they are cut open with large knives
and left to bleed out until they give their last breath, much to the delight of
the crowds, who consider this entertainment. Meanwhile, organizers are scoring
huge profits, with absolutely no regards to animal welfare. In fact, this
matter is completely brushed under the rug. According to Julia-Levy, such
events occur on a weekly basis and usually between 40 and 50 horses die throughtout
the course of an entire month. But as long as people are entertained, the
horses are only viewed as ‘collateral damage’.
Although this form of ‘entertainment’ has
been outlawed, ingenious promoters always find ways to host these events. The
most common method used is paying off the mayors of the local municipalities.
These people in power without any moral fiber are willing to look the other way
for a price of $3, 000 per event, according to unofficial report. The Yucatan
province encompasses 106 municipalities and it believed at least half of them
host such Torneos on a regular basis.
It has also come to my attention that
Coca-Cola has been sponsoring such events (please see the official flyer of
such a rodeo which has the Coca-Cola logo on the bottom right)
We, the undersigned, are disgruntled that a
company which has emphasized social responsibility for so many years is
associated with such barbaric events. We hereto urge Coca-Cola to publicly
denounce these inhumane tournaments and rescind its sponsorship effective
immediately. A complete boycott on Coca-Cola will be imposed until our demands
have been fulfilled.
Help stop Coca-Cola from sponsoring the
death of hundreds of innocent horses! Act now if you agree!
