A video of a German Shepherd pet dog being viciously attacked with
fireworks is making the rounds on social media.
The owner can be seen putting up some fireworks in his yard, near a
pair of bushes. Sensing that his dog
showed interested in this matter, he decided to play a cruel prank on
his companion. He sets off the fireworks before quickly pulling away and
shouting something to his dog. Curious by nature, the German Shepherd
approaches and, in just a matter of seconds, the fireworks go off right in his
face. The blast causes serious damages, as the dog is thrown on his back and
huge amount of blood starts to drip from his mouth. In just a few moments, the
poor animal is no longer alive.
This took place in Taiwan, but no specific location of the attacker
has been revealed at this point. I understand that this video has been a while
ago, but I was unable to find any updates whatsoever.
While Taiwan does have animal welfare laws in place (the animal
welfare act was adopted by the President in November 1998) the penalties for
cruelty to animals are symbolic and only consists of minor fines. Police rarely
investigates these cases and perpetrators are almost never caught, which is
truly unacceptable.
While we, the undersigned, appreciate the efforts coming from
lawmakers to protect the animals (just recently the Parliament adopted a revision of the 1998 act which states that
euthanasia will be illegal in the country by 2017) we feel that more needs to
be done to ensure the mistreated animals get the justice they deserve. We fill
that the current set of punishments are not strong enough to deter heartless
individuals from harming animals. They just know they most likely will never
get caught, or if they do, they will end up paying just a fine. This is
unacceptable and must change.
Support a review of the 1998 Animal Protection Act and support
mandatory jail time for anyone convicting of harming animals as well fines of
at least $10, 000 per each count.
While the attacker in this despicable video might never be brought
to justice, let us ensure that this dog did not perish for nothing and he does
leave behind a legacy of stronger animal welfare laws in Taiwan.
