Stray cats and dogs constitute major problems in various countries in the world. But central and local authorities are having different methods to deal with the issue. In China, they choose the most inhumane ways to tackle the problem of homeless dogs.
For instance, in the Shandong province, all pets were banned. No one could ever keep a pet, for any reason whatsoever. Residents got numerous warning to get rid of their pets all city officials will come after them and terminate them with shovels and other bladed objects. In Yunnan, 5, 000 dogs were euthanized amid a rabies outbreak.
The lack of compassion is simply staggering. And the fact that there are no animal welfare laws makes it even worse to cope with the suffering.
In many cases, dogs are not viewed as companions, but only as food. Dog traders will often used arrows to strike the dogs with to knock them out.
The dog in the photo was discovered in Beijing’s 798 Arts District, near a metro station. He had a huge arrow lodged in his face.
The helpless pooch was walking around in distress, doing his best to get the arrow out, but to no avail. Countless passers-by spotted the dog, took some photos – most likely out of curiosity – and then went on with their daily routine.
The dog was homeless, but was cared for by a barista from a café
nearby. As soon as he heard what had happened, the man, who calls the dog “Big
Black†took the animal to a vet and paid for all his medical bills.
Vets confirmed that this was not an accident, but rather an intentional act. And this is the saddest part of it all: the perpetrators will never be investigated and held accountable for what they did.
The notion of animal welfare does not exist in China. Although pet ownership has risen significantly over the past decade, dogs continue to be cooked for their meat or regarded as vermin in many parts of the country. There are thousands of cases of abuse that are never investigated and perpetrators get to walk scotts-free. Unlike other Western countries, authorities have not given any thought to the idea of animal protection.
Please show your support so the much-needed change can come and China
will become a better place for animals. It is time for the country to prove it
can be a leader and pioneer in every domain, including animal rights.
