Nothing prepared a traffic policeman for
what was going to happen when he pulled over a truck for a routine check-up in
Dong Da, near Vietnam’s capital. Near three tons of cats
were crammed in wooden crates, in the back of the truck. They were brought
across the border from the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region in China; hadn’t it
been for the policeman, the cats would have ended on the dinner plates of
restaurants.
Animal rights activists thought it would be
the turning point for the cat meat trade in Vietnam. Even Brigitte Bardot stepped
up and reportedly called the US Embassy in Hanoi, offering financial assistance
for the rescue of the cats. All these efforts where in vain, as all the
surviving cats were put down by the authorities; in addition, the cat meat
trade is nowadays more lively than ever.
Restaurants that serve dishes based on cat
meat are operation without any restrictions in the country, despite the
official ban on such type of meat. Vietnam’s up-and-coming middle class is
looking to taste ‘exotic’ and expensive dishes such as cats – meals that are
believed to be a source of strength and potency and have an exquisite taste.
A well-known destination for cat meat
lovers is in Va town, Bac Ninh province, about an hour’s drive from Hanoi.
Cats that end up on dinner plates are kept
in terrible conditions before being put down. The owner of the Quy Beo
restaurant boasts about destroying 31 cats in just one day. ‘We’ve never been
busier’ he added.
According to restaurant owners, police
officers and high-ranking officials – the people that should be applying the
law – are frequently seen eating cat meat, usually at the beginning of the
month, for strength and good fortune.
Please sign the petition and demand an end to the cat meat trade in Vietnam! Tell the authorities that pets are not food, they are family! We, the undersigned, demand a crackdown on the illegal cat meat market and ensure that laws are applied!
