This appalling photo was snapped in the public market of Dimapur, in India’s Nagaland region. It is place full of life, where numerous cultures blend in and form an exquisite venue.
The most shocking thing about this place can be found in the public meat market, where countless canines are placed in bags, tied up and left in front of improvised stalls by vendors. Yes, dogs are sold for their meat in plain sight. In Nagaland, dog meat is viewed as a traditional dish and is widely popular. Dog meat traders have been having their way for a very long time and have scored impressive profits as a result of the boom in the industry.
Dog snatchers are in charge of grabbing as many dogs off the streets and bringing them to the market. In this place, dogs are not regarded as companions and man’s best friend, but only as a way to earn a living.
Dog are kept alive in these stalls to ensure the meat always stays fresh. Customers get to pick the dogs they would like to eat. After that, vendors proceed to pounding these helpless creatures over their heads and bodies with large, heavy sticks, before cutting them open and removing the meat. Their suffering knows no limits. These scenes unfold in front of countless others terrified dogs, who cannot help but think they are next in line. Just look at the photo, the fear of these dogs can be read in their eyes.
Action must be taken rapidly to ensure this inhumane trade comes to an end. Dogs are not food, they make wonderful pets and should not end on anyone’s plate. Furthermore, dog meat is associated with several serious diseases such as rabies, E. Coli or hepatitis. Allowing this trade to continue exposes the general population to serious health risks.
Urge the authorities to stop protecting the profit of dog meat traders. Help ban dog meat consumption in Nagaland, India today!
